Cash safes are tested to determine the grade of burglary protection they provide - the higher their grade, the higher the insurable value of their contents.
Burglary Testing Procedure
To obtain a grade of burglary resistance, each model of safe is subjected to a series of break-in tests using a variety of tools.
The Grade awarded depends on the strength of tool used and the length of time it was used for.
Tools range from a simple sledgehammer to powertools, such as a disc cutter, electro-hammer or thermal lance.
Test Standards EN 1143-1
Burglary-resistance standard for safes, strongroom doors and strongrooms.
Grades run from 0 to VI (low burglary-resistance to high burglary-resistance) for safes and from VII and above for vaults. Safes in this class can also be subjected to an additional test with explosives (EX).
EN 14 550
Burglary-resistance standard for security cabinets.

The locks used on a graded safe must also be certified to ensure that the safe maintains the correct level of burglary protection.
